Author: Lonnette Parks
Walk into any gift or gourmet store, and you'll see that the popularity of beautiful Mason Jar mixes continues to grow. In this follow-up to her best-selling book, The Mason Jar Cookie Cookbook, author and cook extraordinaire Lonnette Parks presents recipes for more than fifty delicious soups, muffins, breads, cakes, pancakes, beverages, and more--as well as some great treats for your pets. And, just as in her previous book, the author tells you how to give the gift of home cooking to friends and family.
For each Mason jar creation, the author provides the full recipe so that you can cook or bake a variety of delights at home. In addition, she includes complete instructions for beautifully arranging the nonperishable ingredients in a Mason jar so that you can give the jar--complete with preparation instructions--to a friend. By adding just a few common ingredients, your friend can then prepare mouthwatering baked goods, refreshing beverages, and satisfying soups and breakfast dishes in a matter of minutes. Recipes include Golden Corn Bread, Double Chocolate Biscotti, Ginger Muffins, Apple Cinnamon Pancakes, Barley Rice Soup, Viennese Coffee, and much, much more.
Whether you're interested in cooking a stack of golden pancakes in your own kitchen, giving distinctive Mason jar recipe mixes to friends and family, or searching for a clever fund-raising idea, The Mason Jar Soup-to-Nuts Cookbook is the perfect book.
Publishers Weekly
As the holidays approach and homemade gifts are in demand, cooks who are also crafts enthusiasts may appreciate Parks's ideas for putting together 50 different kinds of Mason Jar mixes. Dry, nonperishable ingredients are layered in pint- or quart-size jars; the lids are then topped with colorful fabric squares and tied with ribbon and tags bearing cooking instructions. For "Breakfast Fare," "Muffins, Scones and Breads" or "Cookies and Cakes," all the gift-recipient needs to do is add fresh dairy products to create, say, Butter Pecan Bread or Toffee Chip Cookies. Some of the "Soups and Stews" require the addition of meat and canned broth, or the overnight soaking of dried beans (Beefy Bean Soup), but most Beverages (Mexican Hot Chocolate and Southern Peach tea, for example) need only water. Cooks can keep these mixes for themselves, of course, and Parks has cleverly put instructions for preparing the different dishes at home on each left-hand page, while those for creating a gift jar are on the right; pre-written gift tags are included, too, ready for photocopying. While Parks's ideas are quaint and generous, there are too many recipes that call for such ingredients as non-dairy creamer or Tang, to fully enthuse the home cook. (Jan.)
